Matt Barnes
Assistant Director of Coaching u15-u18

 

Matt Barnes is the Assistant Director of Coaching for the u15-u18 teams within the Metro FC program. Matt is also a full-time police officer for the City of Trotwood.

Matt has collegiate coaching experience as a three year volunteer assistant coach for the University of Dayton men’s soccer program.  In his second year on staff as the goalkeeper coach, Barnes helped the Flyers to an overall record of 11-5-4, a third place finish in the A-10 (5-2-2), and a birth into the semifinals of the A-10 tournament.  Last year, UD goalkeepers posted on overall Goals Against Average of 0.94, along with six shutouts.

Prior to joining UD, Barnes spent nine years as a high school coach.  His last four years were at Piqua High School, where he was the head coach of the boy’s varsity team.  He is the second winningest coach in the program’s history, and was voted Dayton North High School Coach of the Year in 2003.

In addition to his high school coaching experience, Barnes brings with him an extensive club background.  Most recently, he has spent the previous three seasons working with the Southern Ohio Soccer Academy, serving as the head coach for the 87 boys, 90 boys, 89 girls, club goalkeeper trainer, and boys director of coaching.  During that tenure, his teams have advanced to the semi-finals, quarterfinals, and round of 16 of the Ohio South State Cup.  The tournament successes of his teams include:  three championships, eight finals, and three semi-final appearances.  His most recent U18 team has seen ten players graduate to collegiate soccer.  In addition, he has worked as an Ohio South Olympic Development coach since 2003.  

As a player, Barnes was a goalkeeper at Bridgewater College.  He was a two-year starter and co-captain.  During his tenure there, Barnes set five school records, was a back-to-back Defensive MVP recipient, and earned All-ODAC honors.  Barnes continues to play with the Metro FC amateur team in the first division of the Dayton Amateur Soccer League.

A native of the Dayton area, Barnes continues to reside in Kettering with his wife, Devon, and their two children, Peyton and Zoe.  Barnes holds a USSF ‘C’ license and NSCAA Goalkeeping Diploma.  He will be a 2006 graduate of Franklin University with a degree in Business Administration.
